CONNECTIONS – The Dark Side

ART and ORGANISM

THE DARK SIDE OF CONNECTIONS

As a biologist the metaphor in the foreground for me derives from neurology.

(the connectome)

but my favorite visual metaphor is Piranesi (1761)

WHAT ARE THE WAYS IN?

INPUT: Stimuli to sense-organs (“bottom-up”)

WHAT ARE THE WAYS OUT?

OUTPUT: Integrative areas to effectors (glands, muscles) (“top-down”)

Pathways? gorgeous in color-coded scientific illustrations,

but my favorite visual metaphor is Piranesi (1761)

and then…

Continuing with our neuronal metaphor and with a Piranesi prison in the back of my mind, read about THE CONNECTOME.

and further: we can have TOO MANY CONNECTIONS–they need to be pruned in their time (Get your biological grounding)
